I regularly use iPhone to create a WiFi personal hotspot to feed my MacBook Pro. It's working fine via WiFi but not via USB. Says "cable is unplugged," which is not true. I have tried various cables to eliminate the wire as the problem.

The Mac does not generally consider USB to be a networking protocol.
Do you have some reason why you think this should work?
If you are familiar, the iPhone can be set up to deliver a personal hotspot from its cellular data connection. This can then be accessed by up to five other devices either wireless or wired. The wired method is delivered by Lightning cable to ethernet through a Mac USB port.
But the latter isn't working for me.

Are you using a USB port directly on the chassis of your Mac, not on a Hub, or external display or keyboard?
Does the network pane acknowledge that the Hotspot should be there, but is not currently working?
Have you tried (Assist me) > (Diagnostics) ??
Directly plugged into MacBook. I told you what it says "cable is disconnected". Excuse me but do you know anything about this?
