Q: HP Photosmart Scanner Doesn't Work with macOS 10.12

I upgraded my two MBPs to 10.12 and now my HP Photosmart 2610xi scanner is not recognized. The printer still works fine, but macOS doesn't show the scanner functionality. This is a networked printer/scanner that worked great on the prior versions of OS X. It's consistent between my two MBPs, which leads me to believe upgrading to Sierra broke my scanner support. Please help, I use my scanner frequently!

Thanks in advance!

Contact HP tech support for assistance as well as a possible updated driver.

But the printer driver is distributed via Apple. If I go to HP's site, they point me to Apple for the most recent driver.

Use the free HP Easy Scan app in the App Store.

HP Easy Scan doesn't work either - even when I plug directly into the scanner. It appears others are having issues with Easy Scan and Sierra too.

Do you have a Scan button in the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane?  Have you tried it?

The scan button use to be there, before I upgraded to Sierra, now it's gone. Even after re-adding the printer. If I plug directly into the scanner via the USB port, it shows up, but it's no longer there on the networked printer. Something in Sierra broken the scanning functionality...

Hi, I have this problem as well, on a late 2015 5k iMac. Worked fine with El Capitan.

I spoke to HP support who are aware of the problem and say that Apple is also aware of the problem. In the meantime they suggested going to Preferences > Printers & Scanners, then select Open scanner and you can scan from there. Worked for me.

Image Capture is your friend too

I have mine set to do a basic scan straight into Evernote, one button solution!

the HP & Apple drivers merry go round, every time there is an Apple update has blighted me for years.

(in particular the scan to computer option from the printers display, always gets broken!)

So much so I always keep a copy of the original HP instal disk on my computers for that very reason.

these days I'm running an HP Officejet Pro 8615 and can confirm that printing/scanning and HP Utility are unaffected by my upgrade to Sierra

Unfortunately, this does not work for me. I was using my scanner through Preferences > Printers & Scanners before, but since I installed Sierra, all I got was an empty window when I clicked on open scanner. Then I tried removing and reinstalling the printer/scanner with several methods (including HP drivers 5.0 from Apple and including Easy Scan from Appstore). Now my scanner is not even recognised, but the printer (still) works.
