Why does the Podcast app have a 100mb size limit? I'm on wifi and have a 64GB iPhone so bandwidth and storage space isn't an issue.

The 100MB limit is for cellular data.
Sync the podcast using computer iTunes.
Thank you for the workaround suggestion. I am searching for a solution to direct downloads to the iPhone Podcast app or requesting an updated app that remove the size restriction.
What happens when you sync using WiFi? Have you tried another podcast app. In my opinion, there are much better ones than Apple's.
The podcast limit still exists when connected to wifi. I have used other podcast apps in the past without the file restriction, however they did not sync across multiple devices and typically they became outdated when newer iOS version came out the app developer didn't provide updates. I'd prefer Apple to align its podcast distribution size limits with the client application provided.
