Q: time machine backing up shares

Is it possible to backup a usb drive connected to an airport extreme? As far as I understand it is not possible with the "regular" time machine but might be possible if I use OS X Server (or MacOS server)

Any advise?

Thanks

    Yes and no.

Yes, if you are asking about backing up using a 3rd party application like Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronsync.

No, if you are asking about using Time Machine.....which cannot back up a "network" drive.

That is what I am doing currently with CCC (trial version) , but I thought it might be cheaper to buy MacOS Server and use time machine with the server software. Would this also solve the issue?
