iMac 27" 5K Late 2015 screen artefacts on shutdown

Bit of an odd one - upgraded to Mac OS Sierra, all working fine. When I shut the iMac down, the whole screen displays weird artefacts - (graphics glitch?), then shuts down fine. So not causing a problem, per se, but wondered if anyone else has had this issue?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), macOS Sierra (10.12)

I have had mine for just over a year, although I took out and have Apple Care, I am really reluctant to phone them as it appears that no matter how many exchanges they do, with either the logic board, display, or entire unit, the problem will never be fixed. I really can't be dealing with the hassle of all of that.

I'm only going by what I have read of other people's experiences in this thread, and that's exactly what appears to be happeneing. It's an annoyance and a bit worrying to see the artefacts, but it does seem to be software related - it's not happening in El Capitan. So I'm happy (ish) to sit it out for the time being.

'Apple' has no alternative then shipping Sierra with this horrible looking bug.

Not mentioning this software bug is another matter - it's a matter of money of course - the least damaging for business on the short term .

Silent as usual - excellent I agree for introducing new products - but unacceptable behaviour for this ... it's a disgrace !

----- More ....

I , though , do not have see this bug often (see my earlier posts for details) . However this is not the only bug , and not one I really worry about (though I plan to contact Apple , referring to these posts , within 1 year after buying it) ... I do hate the occasional complete freezing of the system , a freezing that cannot be solved by 'hard quiting' aplications or finder , and requires a power off - potentially damaging the mac and external disks data . I cannot remember to have had such 'bombs' with previous operating systems for decades .. that is baffling me .

I posted my machine info earlier here .. don't have it at hand now (on my ipad).

The problem is definetely related to Sierra , and not noticed by anyone with Capitan.

There have been similar weird screen artefacts reported with Sierra on the new laptops , but happening while using applications I believe I remember - and Apple has been trying to address that in the latest Sierra update.

Of course theoretically this 'event' could indeed be basically the results of a hardware issue and apparently 'caused' by Sierra only , if it is Sierra only that reveals an underlying 'hardware bug' somewhere ...

I posted some 'philosophy' before in this thread. It is my philosophy that because of the simultaneity of the production of Sierra with the 'graphics bug' and the laptop with the new hardware graphics interface - the 'touchbar' it is called , right (?) - the problem is a software bug introduced with Sierra only on the iMac desktop machine

Thank you, Etuj, for your reply. I'm worried because I just ordered a new 27" iMac and am waiting for it to be shipped.

I customized it. So, it won't be easy to return to Apple Store.

I'm worried that it is software, which I hope can be rectified, but I'm concerned that it may be the video card.

Thank you, again, for your reply.

What I'm concerned about is that I'm waiting for another 27" iMac to start shipping to me.

I bought one in Dec. Had to take it back because of the wide bands across the entire screen.

It would happen when shutting down, and it seemed to be worse if the computer had been on for an extended period of time.

I had NOT seen this thread when I was having the issue. I wish I had.

I have been told it's a video card issue. I took it back while it was still new.

But, because I thought it was just a hardware issue, I thought the problem would be solved by ordering another iMac.

So, now, I'm waiting for the 2nd one to be shipped. From this thread, I fear that it's going to be doing the same thing.

That means, once again, I have to load my stuff, start using it, call support, remove everything off it, and lug this huge 27" iMac back to the store.

Model: late 2015, 3.2 GHz, 1 TB flash drive, AMD Radeon R9 M390

Could it be the video card?

It's definitely software related. It should not happen and Apple should take care of it. However, I don't think I have yet heard anyone report a (workflow) problem with their iMac because of this glitch (including myself). My iMac is working fine and is showing this problem once every 7 of 8 shutdowns. We should keep calling Apple about this though.

Thank you, Neutie. Reply is helpful. I've been fretting that it's hardware issue.

In fact, that's what Apple said.

If it's just software, I can hope it will be fixed. Tough to be in a position of just returning one and waiting for the same model to be shipped. I was thinking I should cancel my order before it ships.

Very good to know what you said about no workflow problems reported by others.

How do we make these posts as helpful? I try clicking on them, and nothing happens.

How do we give some of these posts credit as being helpful? I don't usually post in the forums.

Again, thank you for this reply.

No problem. I had the same thing: sent our my iMac for repairing since they advised me to. Then I started noticing a lot of people having the same issues as well. At that point I just had to wait for it (about 10 days). And I can't really afford to send the iMac out much since I absolutely need it for my projects.

But the official Apple Repair Center here in the Netherlands told me it's Sierra as well and they're working on getting it fixed. They didn't replace anything in my iMac since it would not change anything. So, guess we have to wait ór install El Capitan since that doesn't seem to have the problem.

Yes, but the official Apple Support senior tech, here in the U.S., told me it's

a video card issue. Tech said Apple is now becoming aware of it in the new models too.

Apparently, there was an issue with earlier models than the 2015's, but they

are just becoming aware of the issue with the 2015 models too.

Leaves me wondering if any software patches will really fix the problem.

I see the specs on the website, where they are selling the iMacs, still lists the same video card.

Tech I spoke with was convinced it's the video card.
