Q: Sidebar issues with Saving/Importing all across the system - HELP!

Hi All,

 

I keep on having issues with my El Capitan 10.11.6 and it's driving me crazy. Majority of applications, whether by Apple or not, are missing most of the folders in the sidebar when Importing/Exporting files.

 

I used to have an easy access to Documents, Desktop etc - right now there's barely anything. Does anyone know what could be done so I could all those folders back where they used to be?

 

I tried dragging and dropping them from Finder, as they seem to display OK there - but it just results in that puffing sound an animation, and they actually disappear from within Finder then!

 

I have attached a screenshot of the issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Good morning, dynami3.

    The Finder window on your MacBook Pro on OS X El Capitan seems to not be locating anything but iCloud at the moment. Thanks for including a screenshot! I'd be hard-pressed locating anything without that visual to guide me and I'll be glad to help.

    Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Starting in safe mode is a great way to make sure everything's starting up correctly.

    What is safe mode?

    Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe mode does the following:

    • Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
    • Loads only required kernel extensions
    • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
    • Disables user-installed fonts 
    • Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files


    How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If safe mode didn't bring the sidebar back, follow these steps to create another user account to verify if the issue is just with your user account or if it's system wide.

    Hi sarah_s1,

     

    Thanks for the reply. Really appreciated. Problem being, it's not the Finder that seems only to be locating iCloud. Finder works fine, it's just whenever I try to Open or Save a file with any kind of application, I'm being presented with the above - which makes navigating around my Folders, in order to retrieve a File or Save a File in the relevant place, very cumbersome and time-consuming.

     

    I'm a bit confused with the discrepancy between what Finder shows and what any app, e.g. Pages, where this screenshot actually originates from, comes up with. Seems to be the case for each and every app imaginable - both Apple apps like Pages or Final Cut Pro X, and non-Apple apps like Photoshop or Word (although I wouldn't expect any support on the latter here).

     

    If you have any suggestions as to what to do in order to have all relevant folders (main hard drive, My Documents etc.) displayed there, along with the iCloud, so that I could hopefully get back to being able to Open/Save files in one or two clicks, as opposed to having to about a dozen each time around, I would really greatly appreciate that.
