Q: Apple TV configuration 2016

Got this new ATV however I'm not able to view my NAS drive from within the Apple TV screen.

AT the Apple Store, I saw the connection to NAS drives in the settings menu and after I was assured by Apple staff this is possible I bought the device on this premise.

i have been tinkering with the setup menus but no success.  My NAS is a Synology DS 1814 with 8 bays.

CHecking through the literatire, I was to use DS video which is an App on my phone to push the video to my 'device' which is the ATV. Aside I have tested DS video which plays the movie on my phone but I cannot upload or play on my TV screen via ATV.

The

Additionally,, my iPhone doesn't pair with the ATV. I had to set it up manually when I first bought it. I d/l the Apple TV App for iTunes which sits on my phone. I tried again to access my ATV but got the message - cannot see Apple TV you must be on the same WIFI as your Apple TV. The Apple TV is connected by Ethernet. my phone is using WIFI from a router(repeater) downstairs and my Cable router is upstair. Even going upstairs and connecting with the Wifi upstairs and running downstairs to the ATV it still can't find my iPhone device and connect by blue tooth To the ATV.  The bluetooth is activated on my phone.

shall I give up and return this?  It's not working the way I want it to. iTunes can be accessed in my iPad connected by cable to the TV. I don't need a $200 device to do the same thing. I really want to play stuff from the NAS which is the primary functio.

I doubt you did see a network drive in the Apple TV settings, however you can use such hardware with 3rd party software such as Plex (one of a few)

With regard to the Remote app, if the router doesn't bridge the wifi and ethernet networks the app won't detect the Apple TV, it's nothing to do with bluetooth. Repeaters have been shown not to work very well with the Apple TV, try extending your network with ethernet.

HI Winston. My ATV can login to the WiFi downstairs with the repeater's own SSID and password and it's able to scan the internet for other movies. My Wifi on my iPhone is logged in to the same SSID/password on the extender downstairs but still connecting to the ATV with my phone using Bluetoot, the ATV can't find the device (My iPhone).

I suppose another solution would be to try to get a Mac mini and put it in place of the ATV hoping that it can scan my NAS on the network then hopefully I can play some music/video. However,  I should be able using iTunes to find and lease movies via the Apple Store. The only thing I can't play are files which are Windows by nature with those PC extensions that are stored on my Synology NAS.

Do you think this is a better solution than Apple TV?

I don't quite follow a lot you are saying but your phone can't connect to the Apple TV using bluetooth.

Winston, this is exactly correct. The iPhone can't pair up with the ATV. I have the remote for the ATV however I need the iPhone's function to use the App Video DS that will forward the movies/songs from my NAS to the ATV. I try to use Plex but it won't function properly. I think Apple has made the ATV too integrated into iTunes that it doesn't have the added functionality to access NAS drives. The ATV main features are so similar to an iPad connected by cable to a TV that's there's nothing really more I can achieve with it apart from having a remote.  I'm thinking an Apple Mac mini will be able to access my NAS drive and play movies and I can use a wireless keyboard in front of the TV. The aim from this exercise is to have a media device in my lounge room. I have a PC upstairs I can use for computer work as well so the Mac Mini can be used like a media cente. Thanks.
