Q: Our time time capsule flashes an amber light, and utilities says that it is overheating. What is the problem?

We have been having a problem with our time capsule (less than 2 years old) - the amber light flashes, the fan runs often, and in searching in "utilities" on my mac, it says that it is overheating. What is the cause of this?

The Time Capsule fan runs at all times, so you should not be aware of the fan running "often" on the Time Capsule.

If you are receiving a message that the Time Capsule is overheating, then there is likely an issue with the internal power supply on the Time Capsule.

If you have an Apple Store near you, it would be good idea to take the Time Capsule in to let the experts verify the issue and discuss your options.

Following on from Bob's comment.. the TC should be replaced if you have applecare on any computer, ipad or apple tv. It is still possible to buy applecare on a valid product you own.. or even buy one.. apple tv plus applecare will then cover your TC as long as it is within 2 years.

Thank you for these two very helpful comments! Our problem has been solved. We took the TC into the Apple Store, and they replaced it for no charge. And yes, our applecare covered it! There was no real explanation given as to why it was overheating; they replaced it readily, as it was evident something was not working properly. We're very thankful ...

It can be just full of dust.. but the Apple design should take into account dusty environments.

Anyway getting a replacement is the best outcome.
