Q: Apps hang opening iCloud Drive documents (OS X El Capitan 10.11.6)

Very strange problem. I haven't actually used iCloud Drive much for a long time so I'm not 100% sure what has changed on my system since, but for some reason attempting to open any old documents I have stored there causes a severe hang requiring a force quit in Activity Monitor (oddly enough, using the context menu to "Open With > App Name" instead of a normal file open dialog within the app causes Finder to hang instead). If I copy and paste the documents onto the desktop or anywhere else locally everything works perfectly fine, so nothing is wrong with the files themselves. The problem only happens when opening them directly from iCloud Drive folders.

I recently changed the email associated with my Apple ID, which forced me to sign out of iCloud and sign back in again, redownloading all of my iCloud Drive data in the process. Could this have something to do with it, and does anyone know how I can fix the problem? I've been planning on using iCloud Drive more extensively and this is very concerning to me.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Have you tried toggling iCloud Drive on/off under Settings > iCloud with any effect?

I had tried that and it didn't help, but I have since solved the problem. I went through a process of pretty much everything I've ever had to do to fix a problem just in case: rebuilding system caches and databases (Spotlight index, etc.), file system/permissions check, nvram/SMC reset and such. At least one of those things seems to have fixed the problem for the time being. I would have liked to know which measure in particular resolved it in case the annoyance recurs, but I simply didn't have the time to test every possible solution one by one.

Glad to hear it's resolved for you.  Sorry if I couldn't have been more help.
