Q: iMac late 2012 edition crashes on restart after installing Sierra

I installed Sierra on my iMac, late 2012 edition, and now it crashes on restart and turns off, (Black screen).

It has been running fine since upgrading to Sierra yesterday, but this morning I restarted and the iMac shut down half way through the start up process. I've turned it on several times, but it keep crashing about half way through the set up process and just turns off, (Black screen and power total power off).

I restarted in Recovery mode, (Command key + R during restart) and am currently restoring OS X via my last TimeMachine back up. According to the screen, the restore will take about 2 more hours to complete.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, did you identify the cause of the problem?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

No issues on my 2010 Mac Pro but generally these kinds of problem can be traced back to 3rd party installs that are trying to run at startup.

If the problem persists try booting into safe mode

Well, I've already initiated the Restore process, so I'll have to wait until that finishes. Meanwhile I'll look at the link you supplied for staring up in safe mode. It's been a while since I've done that, so I don't remember the procedure.

    Thanks

Below is the report. It looks like some issue with an old Wacom tablet might have caused the crash during set up, but I thought I'd uninstalled that tablet years ago along with any related software. I probably used Wacom's uninstall application to do that. Anyway, I'd appreciate your help with this.

The first issue you need to address is that you have installed kromtech antivirus and also MacKeeper. OS X is extremely secure and does not require any third party av, cleaning or other maintenance utilities. If left alone and simply kept up-to-date OS X will run reliably for years. Locate the developers instructions for both apps and uninstall and then restart in Safe Mode to clear some caches and then restart normally and re-test.

In almost ALL circumstances using those types of apps will create more problems than they solve. Many people that install AV and cleaning apps have switched from MS Windows at some point thinking OS X = MS Windows therefore must be treated the same, this is false thinking.

    Best of luck!

I did remove the antivirus apps as you suggested and then restarted, starting back up in safe mode. Then, I restarted again through normal restart process, and everything was running fine until the computer went to sleep the first time. When I woke it and opened Finder to open a document the response was eternally slow. It did finally open the window, but when I selected a file I got the spinning wheel for so long that I tried the quit utility. Finder didn't show up in the quit utility as a running app, so I shut down the computer to reboot it again. During the next start up all I got was a white screen with a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I did a forced shut down by depressing the power button and then tried starting up again in restore mode, (Command + R). I can't restore though because now the hard drive doesn't show up when I get to the point where I have to select a destination drive. There simply isn't a drive listed. I opened the disk utility and verified the drive is present and working properly, so I assume the path to it is gone. At any rate, the computer can't find it, so I can't restore. It seems like my only option now is to go get an external hard drive and try restoring to that to see if I can get the computer working again. Any suggestions?
