Resizing windows choppy

Hey Guys, since updating to macOS Sierra, I have noticed resizing some app windows is very slow and choppy. iTunes for example, when trying to resize the window (while in the recently added tab with all the music thumbnails) it takes forever to resize to the desired size, and the animation is all choppy.

This behaviour seems unatural to me as I have a late 2015 27in 5k iMac with an i5 6600 cpu and an m395 gfx card which should be more than enough for such simple tasks.

Does anyone else have a simillar problem? Does anyone know a fix?

Thanks!

Hey,

Just wanted to add that it's the absolutely same here with my macbook pro 2016 13" regular. And it's not just iTunes, it's the same with iMovie for example. Also some random occuring spinning balls while browsing. A 2011 iMac running Sierra as well runs smoothly as I wish it would be.

Also, because you can't wake up a macbook pro 2016 while a non certificated usb-c adapter is plugged in without loosing your wlan signal (and i didn't know), I had my macbook replaced within the first 14 days. I tested two brand new machines, with a time machine backup and with a total new setup. It was choppy, every, time. I didn't lose my hope but **** I'm disappointed.

Hoping for High Sierra, but not too much.

Hello msecerov,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding since upgrading to Sierra, you've experienced issues with resizing app windows. I know it can be concerning anytime the expected performance changes. I am happy to help

First, I recommend testing this issue in Safe mode. This will allow your Mac to run certain checks, prevent startup items from automatically launching, and delete cache. Follow the steps below to start in safe mode.

  1. Start or restart your Mac.
  2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
  3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
If the issue isn't present in safe mode but returns when restarting normally, try disabling login items using the link below:
macOS Sierra: If you think you have incompatible login items
If this issue persists in safe mode, it's possible user settings or files are the cause. In this case try testing in another user account. Use the following link for assistance.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Cheers!

Thanks for the answer, I've tried the safe boot method and the performance of my iMac in it is aweful. Everything lags and the animations are missing, even scrolling in safari looks bad. I have tried logging with a different user and the problem is still present.

I have now checked my login items and they are:

iTunes helper

Magnet

Mail

Messages.

Have tried closing them all and resizing iTunes is still messy. It feels like my iMac is 10 years old, not a brand new almost top of the line one. Very annoying.

I do not notice any other performance issues other than choppy animations in some places. So can it maybe be an iTunes fault? Maybe something to do with cover images? Because as I said, it chops most when in the recently added tab with all the album cover images.

Thanks!

Thank you for trying the steps we suggested and following up. The additional information you've provided is very helpful. Next we recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). This can resolve issues with slow performance and response. Follow the steps below to reset the SMC on your iMac.

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Unplug the power cord.
  3. Wait 15 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button to turn on the Mac.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If the issue continues, back up your content and reinstall macOS Sierra using the link below:

Thanks for the swift response.

I have followed your advice on reseting SMC and the problem still persists.

Do you have any more advice?

I really do not want to reinstall my whole OS as the iMac is just a month old and I have not installed or done anything that could have affected its performance. The issue is mainly focused on iTunes.

Can anyone else try and open itunes switch to the recently added page and try to resize the window by draging it by the edge and see if the resizing animation seems laggy and jittery?

Cheers!

Just wanted to say that I just tried this and I have the same exact problem on a new 2016 top model MacBook Pro.

Resizing the window is embarrassingly unresponsive and choppy. Such a basic function.

I also get extremely low frame rates when expanding/collapsing an album in album view. Does anyone else get that also?

Just seems awful.

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro 13 retina (mid 2014) and I tried everything to fix this.

I don't know is Apple trying to do, but from the Yosemite, to El Capitan and now to MacOs Sierra, this animations are ridiculous. It's something that really annoying me and many other users. Just a quick search in google and you find mountains of users complaining about this. A Windows 10 installed in bootcamp is snappier than the O.S. made for the hardware... Apple HAD strength with performance in their devices. Even my Iphone 7... &*(ˆ**&()()... I'm really sad...

Same issue, new top model 2016 MacBook Pro with the upgraded graphics driver and hard drive and iTunes is buggy as ****. Constant beachballs, resizing is choppy, songs can stream/play but I can't download tracks permanently (they start to download and then immediately stop). This is still happening after updating to macOS Sierra 10.12.2 and iTunes 12.5.4.42 today.

iTunes also starts up with my playlist column missing on the left every time. It reappears if I switch to another type of media in the chooser - e.g., "Movies" or "TV Shows" - and then go back to "Music".

WHAT. THE. ****.
