Q: AirPort Express LAN problem

Hi

I've recently purchased an Apple AirPort Express router and am having several problems using the ethernet connection with the AirPort active. The thing is, with my old router, I could've had it connected to the ethernet cable, while at the same time connected with a LAN cable to my Macbook (late 2015). The old router would've generated a wifi connection, but at the same time, would've enabled a cable internet connection to my Macbook without the WiFi activated. People could use the WiFi in the household, but the Macbook would be connected to the internet by cable (a lan cable which connected the router)

My question is how do I enable a cable connection on my Macbook using a LAN cable from the AirPort Express, while at the same time, keeping the WiFi active. At this moment, I have the ethernet cable connected to the AirPort and the Lan cable also connected to the AirPort and the Macbook, but the internet won't work unless WiFi is active. I would like to turn off the WiFi on the Macbook and still have an internet connection thanks to the LAN cable which is connected between the AirPort Express device and the Macbook.

Thank you

MacBook Air, iOS 10.0.2

Is the AirPort Express the only router in your current network configuration? Regardless, what is the make & model of the Internet modem that you have the Express directly connected to by Ethernet? ... or is the Express connected by Wi-Fi to the modem?

I don't know the make of the internet modem. The internet provider has the modem set up somewhere up on the building and have drawn a cable into my apartment and given me a PPPOE account which I use to connect. I do not have access to said modem, only to the ethernet cable. The ethernet cable is currently connected to the AirPort Express device which enables me to have wi-fi in my apartment. But the thing is, I have a second LAN cable connected from the AirPort Express to my Macbook and was hoping that, like the previous router I had, would enable me to have Ethernet connection on my Macbook whilst also generating a Wi-Fi signal by my AirPort Express (as was the case with the previous router).

Also, when I connect the ethernet cable dirrectly into my Macbook, everything works fine and dandy. I just can't seem to use an ethernet connection on my Macbook when the ethernet cable is connected to my AirPort Express and the router connected with the laptop through a LAN cable.

Let me try to understand how the AirPort Extreme is currently configured.

Using the AirPort Utility, please tell me what the following are set to?

    • Internet tab > Connect Using = ?
    • Wireless tab > Network Mode = ?
    • Network tab > Router Mode = ?

Internet  - Connect using = PPPOE

Wireless - Network mode = Create a wireless network

Network - Router mode = DHCP and NAT (but it's grayed out and I can't select anything else)

    Ok, those settings look correct.

You stated that when you connect your MacBook directly to the Ethernet it gains Internet access, but not when it is connected via Ethernet to the AirPort Express.

Did you change the Ethernet network settings on the MacBook when you switched? That is, was it reconfigured to use DHCP when connected directly to the Express or was is still configured for PPPoE?

Well, at first, when I connected the AirPort for the first time, its settings were DHCP and wouldn't connect at all, not even with the wi-fi on, because it couldn't match up with the PPPOE account and password. I changed the setting to PPPOE but only on the AirPort. The ethernet connection on the Macbook remained untouched.

PPPoE does require at least on network device that is directly connected to the DSL modem to provide user credentials. That could be the Express or your MacBook.

What is confusing me at the moment is that I would suspect that the MacBook would not get an Internet connection when directly connected to the wall Ethernet connection AND configured as a DHCP client ... as it would not be able to provide those credentials ... AND you are saying that it does when you substitute it for the Express.

Yea, I think I'm just going to leave it on wireless mode and use the Express. After all, wires do kind of annoy me and I've seen that the download speed is kinda the same (about 4-5mb/s on vuze downloads -utorrent doesn't really work, idk why...that's good, right?). On speedtest I usually get to the 45-50 mb mark so I guess nothing's really affected by the Wi-Fi setting.
