Q: Why does iTunes not update iOS apps automatically?

I'm not sure whether this feature doesn't exist or whether this is an individual problem but when I open iTunes, iOS apps will automatically be downloaded, but existing apps do not automatically get updated? I have to manually context click on each app badge that sports the 'Update Now' banner and click "Update"? I have Automatic Updates enabled on my iPad but not my iPhone.
