Q: Favorites/Top sites button missing

There used to be a button on the Top sites page to change it to Favourites (and vice versa). This button has disappeared. In Preferences/General I have to choose between Top sites and favourites for BOTH new tabs and new windows — I can see one or the other. What happened to the ability to switch between these two views — I use them both. I also have no Bookmarks pane in Preferences. [OS X 10.11.6; Safari 10.0]

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

There is a work around until this problem is solved.

    1. Click “View” menu in the Safari menu bar and choose “Customize Toolbar”.

    2. Control click the Top Sites button in the sheet that drops down and choose “Add Top Sites”.

Click “Done” button at the bottom corner.

    3. Move the mouse over to the toolbar and command click the Top Sites button.

    Top Sites tab will appear.

Thanks, but I know this. My problem is that I can only have Top Sites OR Favorites, regardless of where that button is. I would have to go into preferences every time I wanted to change views. I used to have this button:

in both views, which let me switch between them. This is the button I can no longer find.

Yes, that button is missing in Safari 10.

Hopefully this feature will be restored when the  updates are released.

I have the same problem. I use both Favorites and Top sites. By the way, recently I found that I can only add bookmark under a folder in Bookmark, like 'Favorites', 'Folder1', 'Folder2',  etc. I used to add bookmark directly under bookmark folder. Do you have the same problem?
