You can also use Spotlight to search the computer for QuickTime. If Spotlight doesn't find the app, it probably isn't there.
Are you getting an error?

Quicktime 10 is built into OSx Yosemite, so it has to be there. There would be a really big issue if Spotlight could not find it.

I now have Quick Time in applications but it will not open a video file which works fine with VLC. My friend wants a copy to use on Qick Time. Any way round this?

Unlike VLC, Quicktime may not be able to open every video format under the sun.
You would need to convert the video to a format Quicktime can open.
