Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to keep you Mac running efficiently and the energy saver options are great way to do that. Before we go to far it's always a good idea to back up your Mac using Time Machine. If you don't already have a backup and would like to make one have a look at this article for the steps to do so:
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
Next I'd recommend resetting your NVRAM (aka PRAM) which stores some of the settings on your Mac. This article will guide you through that process:

sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
and then reboot and setup the energy setting again.
