CAN'T ENTER PHONE NUMBER for Settings,  i Messages, Send and Receive, "You can be reached by message at"

Correct, an iPad can be linked to an iPhone's telephone number, but otherwise an iPad can only use email addresses as send from and receive at.

 

If you have an iPhone registered with Apple's iMessage service, then you can sign in to iMessage with the same AppleID on the iPad and use the iPhone's phone number with your iPad.  If you do not have an iPhone, you cannot use a telephone number with an iPad and Apple's messaging app.

    You can't add phone numbers to an iPad. Otherwise you could add anyone's phone number and receive their texts messages.

     

    If you are using an iPhone, the phone number will already show up if iMessage is enabled.

     

    When you send a message from an iPad, it is technically sending the message using your Apple ID. That's why it only works on Wi-Fi.

    WE FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM.  To link the iphone to the IPAD both the iphone message and IPAD message must be on.  Then sign in on you iphone as it is new and it will link with the IPAD and the IPAD WITH SEND A CODE that must be entered on the iphone.  Then it works!
