... never had an antivirus installed,
That is a common misconception, as OS X already incorporates robust protections against viruses and malware. Installing a non-Apple "anti-virus" product will increase its exposure to those threats.

Sep 27, 2016 2:06 PM in response to D_@_nby BobTheFisherman,That's nice. Reduces the site's credibility in my opinion. It is somewhat curious that none of the products reviewed by that site got a negative review while the consensus in these communities of Apple users appears to be not to use third party anti virus apps.

Sep 27, 2016 1:59 PM in response to D_@_nby JimmyCMPIT,Malware bytes is the only thing I would ever run and the only reason I would is does not inherently run like any AV and only removes malware it finds, not actively use system resources to keep them out. As a result when you are done scanning and you quit it's not using the OS to stay resident.

That organization of funded by antivirus software developers.

Reduces it? This little nugget completely obliterates it.
Enjoy.

Sep 27, 2016 2:44 PM in response to BobTheFishermanby D_@_n,Im sorry but im confused. You said earlier not to use avira. My reply to the OP was not in regards to using avira only.
now you are saying that not only not to use avira but not to use any antimalware at all including malwarebytes?
So you get a malware that attacks safari or google chrome or firefox. Now what ?

Sep 27, 2016 2:52 PM in response to D_@_nby Grant Bennet-Alder,If you might have adware installed on your Mac
If pop-ups persist on your Mac, you might have inadvertently downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software). Some software that you download from certain third-party download sites might include both the software that you want and the adware.
If you think that you might have adware on your Mac, update to the most recent version of OS X El Capitan. If your Mac already has the most recent version of El Capitan, restart it. El Capitan removes adware only at login. If you still see advertising on your Mac, contact Apple.

Sep 27, 2016 2:59 PM in response to D_@_nby BobTheFisherman,Indeed you are confused. I said not to use any third party anti virus apps. I did not mention MalwareBytes. MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. I often recommend MalwareBytes to assist in finding malware/adware.
This is very good advice by John Galt: Effective defenses against malware and other threats

Sep 27, 2016 2:59 PM in response to BobTheFishermanby D_@_n,avira is not an antivirus only. I think you are confused. you said not to use avira, not to install it, and to use nothing to a comment that was referring to options of what antimalware applications can be used.
bit defender same as avira can detect malwares.

Sep 27, 2016 4:00 PM in response to D_@_nby Grant Bennet-Alder,NOTHING additional is required. Everything you need was shipped in the box your Mac came in. It is unwise to install anything.
It is particularly unwise to install third-party anti-virus programs that scan your files These make a Big Show of scanning ... for things that are not a threat to your Mac (PC Viruses to which your Mac is not vulnerable).
Anything you add may make your Mac slow and unstable. If you get adware, do a Restart (Apple removed their original detailed article about where to look for stuff and just built the adware removal function right in).
If you are absolutely desperate, you could run malwarebytes, ONCE. There is no need for a persistent third party anti-malware on top of everything already built into your Mac -- it will NOT make anything better.

Sep 27, 2016 5:06 PM in response to Commanderqaby LuxLuther,I would only get AV software if you have Boot Camp, and only installed on the windows partition. Can't say what the future will bring but security software is a nightmare on the Mac at the present time.

You, however, are the person who is making recommendations for software that is not a good idea and you don't seem to understand why. That's why Grant has addressed this to you.
