To sum up the debate, you don't need it if you know how to safely use your mac. It can take care of itself pretty well.  However, if you feel like you need the added protection, there are a number of free and paid solutions. Just try not to get caught up in the "Which one is better?" battle, they all do pretty well its just a matter of your preference. Best of luck!

However, if you feel like you need the added protection ...

If you feel you could benefit from the added protection, your are sorely mistaken. Just the opposite will happen.

Third-party scanners can give you a warm fuzzy feeling that all is well, and you are being taken care of. Once you reduce your vigilance, the criminals will find it much easier to move right in.

NOTHING can replace your being skeptical at very turn. The internet is trolled by criminals all day every day. They want your money, or better yet your identity, and they will lie, cheat, and steal to get it. Do not be a sucker. Stay wary.

No current anti-virus software will do any good on your computer and most of them will do harm.

"...they all do pretty well..." Not true. Just search these communities to see how well they do.

    very well said MacMan.

it is up to the op to choose what to install. if i were her i would have malwarebytes ready in my downloads and i would install anything i like from the apple store. anything outside of apple store might be risky.

You realize that you're in a forum, right?  You're going to need thicker skin if you ever hope to become a Level 9.    Try not to get hung up labels.  It makes you sound desperate for approval.

if you want to make this thread a mess, level 9, Meg, do it. but just so you know, you are replying to a comment that was not addressed to you. `

Please show me in the Terms of Use where replying to people, regardless of who the post was addressed to, is a violation. Hint: it's not.  What I can also tell you is that in the culture of this forum, it's quite permissible. It's called a public discussion forum for a reason.

If i wanted anyone else's answer other than Grant's I would have asked so. though i did not. so if you don't mind, do not reply back to me, do not reply on behalf of grant or anyone else on this thread as you will make it messy and it is difficult (``

Sorry but, until I am told otherwise by the Hosts, I will continue to post as I see fit, not as you think I should. You are, of course, free to ignore anything I post.
