iOS 10 iPod Touch with 1.67 GB of data and cant backup to MBA.
MacBook Air has over 50 GB available.
iTunes could not back up the iPod "xxxx" because there is not enough free space on this computer to save the backup.
I already deleted previous backup in ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/
MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
Mar 14, 2017 is today.
This is still problem - no back-up!!

Don’t delete it there.
Delete iTunes backups in iTunes prefs > Devices.
You should always maintain ~10%-15% free space on you boot drive.
If not, you need to delete/move stuff to another drive.
Traveled to iMac running iTunes 12.4.3.1 with 13GB available.
Backup was successful

That is what I did
Back on my system, after numerous restarts, still backup fails with iTunes 12.5.1

No.
You should keep a minimum of 10% free space. This give the OS room to move things around.

The 50 GB meets that requirement.

And yet a iTunes 12.4.3.1 will without error
Deleted ~/Liibrary/Caches/com.apple.iTunes.
Still have the error.
4 days later and no assistance.
with 12.5.2 still unable to back up 10.0.2
now iTunes 12.5.3.17
