Must update to Sierra to open my spreadsheet?

Surely this can't be correct. I'm currently on 10.11.6, not updating to Sierra due to 3rd party recording interface driver updates not ready. I have one version of Numbers installed, currently version 3.2.2. I used this version of the app to work on the document two weeks ago. Now I'm prompted to update Numbers in order to open the document, but I can't update Numbers until updating to Sierra? Does that not strike anyone as absolutely ridiculous? So is there no way to open my existing document with my existing version of Numbers in El Cap?

Thank you.
