Use of HDMI external monitor with my laptop closed

Hi all. I'm actually using a McBook PRO connected to an external HDMI monitor. Everything is great and I can see properly the desktop of my laptop on the external monitor.

If I leave the computer on and active and I close the screen I should still be able to work with it and see the desktop on the external monitor. On the contrary the external monitor goes black.

If I try to move the USB mouse connected to wake the laptop , nothing happens.

This has been already tested with 2 different monitors and HDMI cables.

Any suggestion ? Anything I need to check in the Energy tab or something like that ?

I've one of the latest MacBook PrO 15" and I'm using Sierra

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Thanks for your quick reply.

Unfortunately I'm trying to do exactly what is suggested on the link you have provided.

I'm actually using a wired USB mouse and Keyboard for test.

Everything is fine when the display is open. I can see the desktop duplicated on the external monitor.

As soon as I close the laptop (leaving it active and not turned off of course..) the external monitor turns to black.

If I press any key on the keyboard or use the mouse nothing happens.

Monitor still black.

If I open again the McBook Pro , I can see immediately the desktop of my computer on the external monitor again
