When tracking exercise using the Workout app, choose the activity type that most closely reflects the nature of your activity for any given workout. This enables the watch to use the most appropriate sensors and/or other data sources.
If none of the preset options are very similar, choose Other. When tracking a workout using Other, Apple Watch estimates active calories based on whichever is the higher of:
- The equivalent of a brisk walk (calories recorded on this basis will vary by person, depending on their personal information), or;
- Data recorded by the heart rate sensor.
The Activity app will also credit the Exercise progress ring with one minute for each full minute of the workout.
Keep in mind also that, if you do not choose to record a particular exercise activity via the Workout app, the Activity app will still run continuously in the background, tracking progress towards your daily Exercise, Move and Stand goals.

Keep in mind, when reading reviews, that developers may address any reported issues via app updates over time.
