Q: home sharing won't work after second sleep

Hi all,

after upgrading to macOS Sierra, I've started experiencing the following odd bug. When the computer (mac mini, late 2012) goes to sleep for the first time after booting, home sharing will be available on all my devices, as normal. When it goes to sleep a second time, however, home sharing simply disappears. That is, I don't see my shared library on my iPhone, Apple TV, etc.

This is highly frustrating, as I use my mac mini as a media hub, and would like it to wake "on call", and cannot do so if the devices do not see the shared library.

Once I wake my mac (manually), the library becomes available on all my devices.

(This may or may not be related, but once I upgraded to Sierra, my mac started going into deep sleep. That is, after a while the front light no longer pulsates, and will simply shut off. This is annoying behavior. I have not changed anything in my power settings. My mac does have an SSD).

Any help will be highly appreciated!

I have not changed anything in my power settings.

You may not have changed anything, but you may want to check the current settings.  Go to System Preferences Energy Saver pane and make sure it's set up as expected, including Wake for network access.  If that does not help, click the Restore Defaults button there, and then set it up again.

my mac started going into deep sleep...

That may indicate a "power management" issue.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

(For a Mac mini, it's basically unplugging it from power as described in procedure.)

Thanks for your reply. Of course I had already tried these things. Womp is on (I also checked via pmset). I have reset the SMC as well as NVRAM. I also tried to reset the power settings. None of these helped, unfortunately.

As a test to better isolate cause, you can create a "Test User" account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  It can be Standard (not Administrator).  Log out and log in to new user account; do not use Fast User Switching.  Try the things that cause these problems.

If the problems do not recur in new user account, the cause is likely to be something in your normal user account.

If the problems do recur, the cause is likely to be at the system level, or perhaps hardware-related.
