"Stopped - 'Filter' failed" Error Message

After upgrading to macOS Sierra, when attempting to send a test print to my Epson Stylus Photo 2200, I get the "Stopped - 'Filter' failed" error message in my print queue.

I left-clicked on the Printer -> Error Log menu item, and I have the following in the error log.

Line #66 in the above seems to indicate the rastertoescpII utility failed with a status code of 256 and the "Interface output queue is full" error message.

Troubleshooting Steps

In an effort to address this problem, I followed the steps outlined in the "Resolve printer issues on your Mac" article. I reset the printing system and that did not work. I also unplugged the printer, removed the contents of the /Library/Printers/ folder, and then plugged the printer back in.

You will need to check with Epson to see if there is a new driver for your device which is compatible with macOS Sierra. The old drivers are not compatible. Even with the new driver, some people are reporting the error is not fixed :-( YMMV.

Thanks. The Epson technical support site was one of the first places I checked. Their instructions essentially do the same thing as disconnecting the printer, removing the contents of the /Library/Printers folder and then re-connecting the printer. I do have a case open with Epson technical support, so we will see what they say. I've also submitted feedback to Apple as the problem manifests both with 10.12.0 and 10.12.1 Beta (16B2327e).

In an effort to further troubleshoot this problem, I disconnected the printer's USB cable from my computer, opened up System Preferences, left-clicked on "Printers & Scanners" and then I right-clicked on the "Reset Printing System" menu option from the pop-up menu

I then performed a normal restart. Opened System Preferences, left-clicked on "Printers & Scanners" then I plugged the printer in. The printer was added, so I left-clicked on the "Open Print Queue..." button and then left-clicked on the "Print Test Page" menu option from the "Printer" menu. Same problem.

After going through the "Reset printing system..." process and restarting didn't work, I disconnected the printer, "Reset the printing system...", removed the contents of the /Library/Printers folder, and then performed a normal restart of my computer.

When the computer came back up, I got the prompt shown below asking me if I would like to install the software for my printer. So I left-clicked on the "Install" button.

I was then presented with the "Software Update" dialog shown below.

After the software was found, it was installed.

When the above dialog was done, I had the "EPSON Stylus Photo 2200" in the "Printers" section of the "Printers & Scanners" System Preference. I left-clicked on "Open Print Queue..." and then left-clicked on the "Printer" menu and left-clicked on the "Print Test Page" option.

Again, the error message was re-displayed.

Same problem with two different Epson XP-400s. No combination of uninstall/reinstall/restart/whatever fixes the issue.

Hello Derek,

The filter failed occurs on previous versions of Mac OS X as well. The error is a Mac OS error that affects the the drivers ability to send the print. Aside from Epson it has affected other printer brand drivers as well too.

As for a resolution I we can provide it's recommended to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver. In a case this issue isn't resolve by that recommendation it would be recommended to contact Apple at that point.

Of course, if you open the /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter folder and "Get Info" on rastertoescpII.app, you get the dialog shown below. I think it is interesting that the "Version" property is set to "Copyright(C) Seiko Epson Corporation 2001-2015. All rights reservered."

But they say it is Apple's problem.

For the record, the issue happens with 10.12.1Beta 2 (16B2333a).

I can start a virtual machine running 10.11.6, connect the printer to the VM, install the software via Software Update and it works without a problem.

If Epson are not willing to take responsibility for getting their devices working with macOS, I think I'd be looking for another printer manufacturer.

At this point, it looks like your only real options are to revert to your previous OS or buy a new, supported printer.

Hi. I had the same issue with my Canon but found that there was something wrong with the document I was trying to print (Word for Mac). I tried a different document and all went well, so I went back to the problem document cut and paste the text into Text Editor, saved that and then cut and paste from Text Editor back to Word and all went well.

From other posts here, this does seem to be an Apple problem. Canon and HP printers have also started crashing after a beta was installed. I'm guessing that this has generated a lot of feedback and that an imminent beta will fix this.
