I just restored it after putting it in forced disk mode, and still no luck. it goes throught the restore process just fine until it turns back on, it just shows the error screen and nothing happens. then an iTunes window pops up and says that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode and that i will need to restore it before it can be used with iTunes. so i restore it again and it takes me back to square one, its just running me in circles.

Ok, try this.

Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.

Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.

The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

Then restore again and see what happens.

Hi,
I am having the exact same problem with the exact same error message, I've tried everything ever mentioned in these discusions but to no avail. Mine will update the songs but as soon as I try to charge it or turn it on the error message appears. I believe it is something to do with a problem in the internal hard drive of the ipod. I'm going to take it into an apple store and seek assistance, I'll let you know
