Q: macOS Sierra is a real dog - too many problems.

Too many unresponsive apps happening, and too many anomalies.

Too many broken parts now.

What a dog. I wish I had never upgraded.

Mac Mini. 2012. July model.

16 GB RAM

2 TB HDD space.

2 TB Backup space

Post upgrade from El Capitan

1. Some usernames and passwords lost

2. All printers and scanners lost from System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners. This option has now gone int Unresponsive mode, and I have lost all printing ability.

3. Microsoft Word goes into Unresponsive mode.

4. Pages takes about 5 minutes + to load a Word document

5. If you have a LOT of photos in your Photo albums, I have about 20,000 up, it takes about 15 hours to index them all looking for facial recognition I suppose, and you can't turn it off, or disable it. This is as soon as you upgrade and do the final boot up.

6. Just tried to re-add my two printers. Can't add them. Sierra is failing on errors. Bad Descriptors, and can't download from Support Server.

What else will I find wrong ?

ok. It's looking like I will have to back track to the previous El Capitan. I'm pretty annoyed now, because normally I have no problems.

My other computer, an iMac - upgraded fine.

OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), iOS7 XCode5 ... lots of neat stuff

What ever it was - it's not there now. Probably left over from the reboot just before I did the check.

It's something to do with file permission handling. I'll have to follow up on it. Maybe just transient.

Why? CleanMyMac3 - although unregistered and out of evaluation time, looks to be pretty well reviewed? I had thought to keep it.

    Ok, here it is.

The Poor Performance may be as a result of the new file management of Sierra, storing stuff in the cloud .. slow internet etc. I'll look into that anyway.

Clean My Mac is far, far worse than the threats it claims to protect you from.

It is probably one of the worst apps written for Mac and is surely in the

top 10 worst at destroying your system.  Just search "Clean My Mac" in

the Apple communities here and you will see systems turned to nightmares

    when this steaming pile...

Just get rid of it.  Your life will be better without it.

Merely uninstalling "CleanMyMac" will not reverse the corruption it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Besides, it remains installed on that Mac.

You should be prepared to erase that Mac and reconfigure it without the system-altering garbage that has affected it. No Mac that has been affected by useless "cleaning" garbage can be expected to operate properly.

Hi, as I mentioned previously, I only had the Trial of CleanMyMac3 installed, and have since used it to un-install itself, as shown on their own web site. It's now gone. A "find / -name *macpaw* -print" returns nothing. Nor does any other variations of searches on anything like it's name, or company. So I'm assuming it's gone.

As for the program itself, I agree, it does present the user with a host of options - probably totalling many hundreds in fact, of things that are supposedly 'deletable'. The real truth of the matter is, that when apps are uninstalled, usually moved to trash, they leave behind old plist files in various places, and other support files usually in the Application Support folder, and sometimes other places. They shouldn't but they do.

Some rare apps have their own uninstall packages with them that takes care of all the attached files.

There would be some value if Apple insisted that app released to the app store had Uninstall packages built into them.

Over the lifetime of a system, many many programs are installed then removed, gradually building up that list of long dead support files. That do in fact clutter up the system, and sometimes continue to cause problems, especially plist files that insist on loading and trying to run. There's a big difference between

    sysctl load -w com.someapp.plist

    and

    sysctl load com.someapp.plist

Which applies equally to sysctl unload. If a plist is loaded as a daemon (-w) simply removing the app by dumping it in the trash will not stop that daemon from trying to run.

Some plist files need modification across OS upgrades, as the OS itself changes.

So when someone looks for ways to clean out the trash, which the OS doesn't do, it's hardly surprising that programs like CleanMyMac3 are used. But what people forget is that programs like CleanMyMac3 can apply Brute Force to the task. It's a bit like the ole Sysadmin bit of advice on cleaning Windows 95. "Just go to the DOS command line and type Move *.* /dev/null" ...

So the adage Caveat Utilitor really applies. If presented with a huge list of things the program calls junk, or not-needed, scan slowly through it and select only that which you KNOW to be left over from old third party apps. That at least gives some security. It's very tempting to "reclaim" like 95GB of storage or more, but seriously, think about it. That's hardly likely.

In short - Using something like CleanMyMac3 and using it with extreme care can help in some cases. As can others in it's class. Just running it and clicking Clean It All ---- is asking for trouble.

There are complaints on the discussion forums about it and others. But not that many actually. And I suspect by reading them that a lot are from people with limited IT experience in any case.

So. Shall I rephrase the original Title of this post.

macOS Sierra is a real good dog.

oh yes. My Etrecheck is looking nice and clean. Nothing to worry about. Even Word seems to be behaving itself for the moment.

In short - Using something like CleanMyMac3 and using it with extreme care can help in some cases.

"CleanMyMac" is capable of nothing that cannot be accomplished with the Mac's built-in tools — other than causing irreversible corruption, which the Mac's built-in tools will not permit. It and similarly categorized products are marketed directly to unsophisticated or neophyte users emotionally vulnerable to the concept of an "unclean" Mac.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

    • Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.
      • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
      • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
      • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
      • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
      • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

"Cleaning" apps are destructive in nature. It's what they do.

There are complaints on the discussion forums about (CleanMyMac) and others. But not that many actually.

Many reports of user-inflicted misery directly caused by "cleaning" apps appear on this site every single day. They are as predictable as the sun rising in the East. Often, the extent of corruption requires completely erasing the Mac and reconfiguring it from the ground up.

"Cleaning" apps are just scams, and not limited to the Mac. There are similar scams for Windows PCs. The following excerpt from http://www.howtogeek.com/162683/pc-cleaning-apps-are-a-scam-heres-why-and-how-to -speed-up-your-pc/ can be applied to either platform:

At worst, PC cleaning apps are digital snake oil. At best, they do a few marginally useful things that you can do with tools included with Windows. Don’t believe the hype — skip the PC cleaning apps.

Substitute "Mac" for "PC" and "OS X" for "Windows" in the above statement, and it remains equally accurate.

Ok, I'm happy to accept your statements. I do still have one quetion though.

"CleanMyMac" is capable of nothing that cannot be accomplished with the Mac's built-in tools

Can you point me at these built in tools please. Especially one that will uninstall an app and all it's related files that were installed with it?

    Thanks

The first suggestion is to constrain one's purchases to apps that don't modify macOS. Apps that modify macOS require a complimentary uninstaller. They frequently don't work (which is the reason I don't modify it to begin with).

If an app developer isn't competent enough to know how to uninstall its own product, it is not to be trusted. "CleanMyMac" is one of them, since its own uninstallation instructions result in leaving at least one system-altering component behind. It's easily removed, but only in its most recent version. On the other hand there is no way to undo the effect of actually having used "CleanMyMac" to alter a system. Its ability to alter a Mac is not limited to its operating system, the programs it incorporates, or the files you create.

Delegating that task to yet another entity is an even worse idea. If you want to find potentially system-altering components, use the Finder. You can also use apps such as EasyFind to search for files that may be related to previously uninstalled software, then use the Finder to drag them to the Trash, or to the Desktop, and confirm you didn't break something while doing that.

You ought not to do that without having a backup plan, should you identify something erroneously – which those "cleaning" apps do with disturbing regularity with no corresponding way to "undo" the damage. The resulting aggregate amount of lost time, money, and data is probably incalculably high.

Finally, there is no justification for implied claims that removing "excess binaries", "useless junk", or localization files will result in increased performance. At best that's utter nonsense. What's worse is that it often results in irrecoverable corruption, perhaps months or years after the user forgot he did that, when an app or operating system update eventually reveals the damage.

There are plenty of similarly useless time- and money-wasting apps marketed to gullible users. Don't be one. If you want to waste time, play a game obtained from the App Store. There are plenty of them and they won't break your Mac.

I have a mid 2012 iMac with the same issues. Almost any given program will hang at some point, even Mac native apps. I've re-installed to no avail. I hate to be forced into totally wiping out everything, doing a clean install, and reloading it all. Reminds me of "Windows" on an old PC.

FWIW, doing a clean install and then reloading everything back on would just restore the problem you are having. There are a couple reasons for slow downs, software that is incompatible with Sierra being the main one.
