Q: Relay a network that requires username and password to create a network that just needs a single password?

Hello,

 

I am currently living in student halls and I am wanting to connect some of my game consoles online. Unfortunately the wireless requires to use my login credentials for uni and the Wii U and 3DS lack an ethernet port. Would I be able to use an AirPort Express device to create a network that just requires a single password from a network that requires a username and password from the ethernet

    No, but you might be able to make things work if you use two AirPort Express devices.

     

    The first Express would be configured to "join" the wireless network and then provide an Ethernet connection to the second Express, which would be set up to "create a wireless network".  In theory, this would allow you to set up your own private wireless network in your room with the second Express while using the first as a "modem" to connect to the Internet connection.

     

    But....and this is a big BUT......we used the word "might" above for a reason, and that would be that you will not know how well.....or, even if.....the setup will work until you try it out, since username and password connections are tricky.

     

    Most schools will not allow wireless routers to be set up on their network.....so if you are not sure about this.....it might be a good idea to first check with the IT folks at the school to ask them about your plans.
