Q: iMac Crashing

Version 10.11.5

iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011)

Processor    2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory   4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics     AMD Radeon HD 6770 512 MB

iMac is constantly crashing. Could barely get it up long enough to type this.

When it crashes, the screen sometimes just goes black, or white, sometimes flashes and with weird vertical lines all over the screen. Yesterday when I had spotify running, the music kept playing on a weird loop even after the screen went haywire. There is no pattern to it crashing. Entirely random.

But today, when I tried to boot it up, it shut on and off over and over again and I had to reset the SMC. Didn't work. I performed a faculty reset and it shut off a couple times but not as much. I'm 99.9% sure it's a hardware issue as I don't see what else it could be, but I ran an EtreCheck anyways.

Here is the EtreCheck :

EtreCheck version: 3.0.5 (309)

Your computer needs the RAM upgraded, however it should not crash because of a lack of RAM. I suspect you have a failing piece of hardware. My recommendation would be to take the computer to your local Apple Store for a free diagnostic or if you don't have an Apple Store near you to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If you are not aware of any AASPs please click the link below to begin finding one.

Nothing in your EtreCheck report points to any software issues causing the problem, hence my hunch that it may be hardware. If it is there is nothing a forum can do to help.

    Good luck.

rkaufmann87 took the words right outa my fingers.  One thing you can do before lugging the computer to an Apple service center is running diagnostics yourself. Restart the computer and hold the D key. Then select the extended test. This isn't as extensive as Apple's diagnostics but it is generally accurate (except for RAM). Sometimes RAM will pass the test when it is actually marginally defective.
