- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

DesktopsWhen Installing software, MacOS copies a minimal version of the new software to the specified device, then boots from that device. If the device cannot run Sierra, you are dead right there. But your old version should still be intact on that device.
