Q: Sierra will not mount my Macintosh HD

I installed Sierra on my Mac Pro early 2011. It will boot to home screen, but I cannot open any applications. I ran disk utility at startup, discovered Macintosh HD unmounted. I mounted it, ran diskrepair. Still nothing. Will not mount Macintosh HD at startup. Any advice?

Did you boot to Recovery?

What exactly happens when you try to open an app?

- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Yes I booted to recovery, chose the disc utility option, chose the mount option for Macintosh HD.
When I try to open an app, I get the "beachball" icon and it just spins and spins and spins.

Try my other suggestions. If still problem then:
- Boot to RTecovery and reinstall the OSX
How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

Thanks. One question. while firevault was encrypting my hard drive, i shut down my laptop to take it home without realizing firevault had not completed. Could that be my problem?

Maybe but you are supposed to be able to shutdown when the initial encryption is in progress with no problems when yo rebot.
