I understand that your Mac is unexpectedly shutting down when there's anywhere from 30 or 40 percent of charge remaining indicated. In such a situation a reset of your Mac's SMC can often help.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac- Shut down the Mac.
- Plug in the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter to a power source and to your Mac.
- Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time.
- Release all keys, then press the power button again to turn on your Mac

If your MacBook Pro continues to shut down unexpectedly, you can run Apple Diagnostics to get a better idea as to whether the battery may need service. You can access Apple Diagnostics by shutting your Mac down and holding the D key down until Apple Diagnostics begins.
