Q: How do I lock individual files on an AirPort Extreme?

We are using our Airport Extreme in an office environment. Is there a way to lock files and documents with a password so only certain individuals can access them? We don't want to lock the entire drive we just want to lock certain files.

There are only three ways to "lock" files on an AirPort Disk:

    • With a basestation password.
    • With a disk password, or
    • With user accounts.

The last option may come close to what you are looking for.

In this case, the disk partition must be formatted in HFS+. On partitions formatted, as such, you can specify individual usernames & passwords. Each having a different level of access (Read/Write, Read-only, or None.) These accounts are not the same as Mac user accounts. You would use the AirPort Utility to create and maintain these accounts.

However, this in on the entire partition, not on individual files or folders.
