I'm getting the following error when I open iTunes Ver. 12.5.1.21.

iCloud Music Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error has occurred 4001.

This happens when I open iTunes and the library is trying to update my iTunes match/Apple Music files. The wheel spins for about 30 minutes and then I get the above error in red. I didn't do anything different. I am using only one iTunes library and files which reside on an external drive. I manually point iTunes to the exact directory and library file when I launch iTunes.

This just started happening. Every thing was working fine up to about a few days ago. I have about 23,000 songs so far in my library.

Any suggestions would be great.

I had the same problem for over 6 months. I cancelled my apple music subscription as it no longer worked. After working with numerous Apple Care senior advisors & engineers problem is totally solved. Engineering reset my iCloud music library. Before the do this you must turn off iCloud music on your mac & off on your iPhone & iPad. Once the advisor gets back to you telling you iCloud music has been reset turn it back on on your mac. I have a large iTunes library & it took 36 hours to complete. Once it is completed turn iCloud music back on on your iPhone & iPad. I subscribed to Apple music again. Everything is working flawless now.

Hi roburger,

I remember people reporting this error in the past. I don't remember if anyone figured out the cause of the problem, but the working assumption was that the Genius database had gotten corrupted. Did you try searching the forums for this error? You may be able to turn up one of those older threads.

Anyway, I believe this was the fix:

First, quit iTunes. Now look in your folder Music / iTunes. Delete the file called "iTunes Library Genius.itdb".

When you open iTunes again, the app should go through the process of regenerating a new Genius database. This will take some time, depending on the size of your library. But I think it should correct the problem.
