5c headphone jack; iOS 10

I will from time to time use my 3.5mm jack to play music in the car. Following the iOS 10 install, it seems like there's a voltage change to the jack itself. If I plug in the headphones (or an aux line, like in the car) I get sound like a tin can, and it seems like the vocal ranges are removed (this has also happened to a friend with phone calls). If I plug the lightning plug in, without changing anything else, it immediately jumps back to full sound, but there's then a buzz from, presumably, lack of grounding. I've tried resetting the phone settings, I've installed the newest update, now I'm just frustrated. Has anyone else experienced this? or is it a known problem that might get addressed?

Hi there, Taolaen!

Thank you for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, I understand that audio does not sound as expected when using the 3.5mm headphone jack on your iPhone 5c. If you connect headphones or an auxiliary cable, the sound is tinny. This happens if you are on a phone call using the jack as well. I definitely know how important it is for all audio to sound clear and crisp, and would be happy to help!

Based on what you've described, my recommendation is to have the iPhone inspected by a Genius or Apple-certified technician, which can be done at an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can find locations, get contact information, and set reservations here: Apple - Find Locations

You are also welcome to reach out to Apple Support directly to review all of your options and set up service. You can get in touch with them here: Contact Apple Support

Cheers!
