Q: MacOS Sierra Mail moving IMAP email to Recovered Messages On My Mac

Since my MacOS Sierra update my email is getting moved to Recovered Messages On My Mac instead of the folder I would like to have it placed in. It can be moved from Recovered Messages On My Mac after a second try. This was not in the previous version of the OS.

I have rebuild the indexs and re-downloaded all my IMAP email again.  Any ideas community?

Hope this is fixed in the next version. Huge annoyance.

Open Mail > Preferences > Rules

Check for a rule that moving messages to the Recovered folder.

    Hi everyone,

I have the same issue when moving my mail to the trash.

Mail create multiple local recovered folders.

I have unchecked all rules but the issue still there.

I am also hoping for a quick resolution.

    Regards,

    Patrick

I have nothing on my rules, it is empty.

Each mail that I move between folders on an IMAP account, goes automatically into a folder "Recovered Messages".

If I erase the folder, it appears again.

    It's really huge annoying.

Try setting up a test account, see if the problem's global, or just related to your account.

    CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

You can skip signing in with your Apple ID unless you need to test iCloud Mail.

Only default Apple apps will  be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open other apps you might want to test.

Fast User Switching will allow you to go back and forth between your test account and regular user to allow time for testing.

I'm glad to see that this issue is not resting just with me. I have no rules and it does it on both of my Macs so its something weird with Mail and its handling of my GoDaddy IMAP account.

If its not fixed on the next update I plan to move my work email to Outlook as this kills so much time.

    THANKS for working this @dianeoforegon

I have the exact same problem. I've been looking for a fix since the update. It's very frustrating. Hopefully someone knows the solution. Thanks!

Is anyone using the beta that came out today? I wanted to see if this Mail fix made it in.

Oh, please tell me someone is because this is getting ridiculous having to sort through my business email twice constantly. I get about 50 real emails a day to that account so this is incredibly frustrating. And it's so weird because this Recovered mailbox is on our local machines and the IMAP account is server-side. So it moves a server-side email to your local machine and then you have to, again, move back to server-side to the desired folder or delete it. Double ugh.

Did you ever test in a new User?

No. But I did remove the account completely, rebooted, re-added the account and it immediately did the same thing. I didn't test with a new User because it doesn't do me any good if it works. It needs to work like it did prior to Sierra. Sierra's Mail.app changed something & Apple needs to address what they broke. Please.

You need to verify that it works in a new User so you know if the problem exists with Sierra or if the problem is in your User's folder.

I did something close, maybe better, and technically a new user.  I do not like to mess with my work MBP to much during magazine production. So, I added my work email account (godaddy IMAP) to my personal Mac mini, Mail has never been opened before. Newer machine too. After a HUGE download it behaved exactly the same as my work Mac.

"Moving email from inbox to a folder creates local copy that has to be moved again." (Apple Gods See This)

I'm waiting to see if this is resolved next Sierra update. Then jumping ship on Mail after using it since day one on the original OS X.  This is major productivity killer and will use MS Outlook to save time.

Cheers! PG (former Apple Tech 8 years)
