Sep 28, 2016 12:34 PMby rkaufmann87,2009 and later iMacs came with HD's that had fan sensors integrated into the HD. Most off the shelf HD's do not have fan sensors inside them. I suspect whoever installed the HD was not aware of this caveat. In your case there are two things you can do, first is to do it right and take the machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider who can install the correct HD or install the correct cabling.
The second and less expensive thing you can do is have some fan control software installed. I don't recommend doing this as one it's not supported by Apple and second if not set correctly you can do more damage to the machine. Of course others will have their opinions on fan control software so weigh what is best in your circumstance.

In addition to SSDFanControl, SMCFanControl and HDD Fan Control also seem to work.

As previously mentioned, there is some risk in installing and correctly setting up any FanControl software.
