New iPhone 7 Plus can't re-add American Express to Apple Pay

I activated my iPhone 7 Plus last night. Previously, I had an iPhone 6 Plus with a Visa Debit, Visa Credit and American Express Corporate card all set up through Apple Pay. I have been able to add both of the Visa cards to my new phone but I am getting a "Card not supported by issuer" error when trying to add the American Express again. I have a confirmation email that the American Express was deleted from my old phone and I am free to re-add it at any time. I also called American Express and they said that the card is 100% good to add from their end. I have updated the new phone to the latest software, rebooted etc.

Does anyone have any tips? My service provider is Verizon although I doubt that matters.

It is a wild guess, but I would postulate that the Amex rep you talked to did not have correct info. As far as I know, when you add a card, Apple forwards that request to the card issuer. They then validate the card and it become available in ApplePay.

FWIW, I have an Amex card (not corporate) on my ApplePay account (iPhone SE) that is running iOS 10. I also added it to my iPad ApplePay account. The reason I am babbling all of this is to indicate that I do not think your problem lies with Apple (iOS/phone) or, for that matter, with Verizon (Verizon is my carrier as well). I have not seen anything posted that indicates your new model phone is having similar problems.

I would try Amex again.

Don't agree with you 100% msac5... my card(not Amex) was added and working fine on my 6+. Upgraded to 7+ and now I can't add my card back. I have Verizon and I work for the institution (actually set up the Apple Pay product for institution) but receive the error message of "Your Issuer Does Not Yet Offer Support for this Card". When I click on the learn more option my issuer is in the listing. So hope I can figure it out because I love my Apple Pay and use religiously.

msac55, I'm in the same situation you are. I converted all my iPhone 6 Plus information to my new 7 Plus last night. As expected, I had to add all the Apple Pay cards' information again (even though I had encrypted backup in iTunes). Two Visas, a Visa Debit Card and a Discover Card all went into the 7 Plus very easily. Only the American Express (Corporate) card bombed. I called AmEx moments ago and was assured everything was approved/okay/blessed, etc. from their end. The rep said I should download and reinstall a fresh version of Wallet. Since Wallet comes with the phone and doesn't yield a delete "x" when I put the apps in possible delete mode, I don't think I could delete Wallet if I wanted to---which I don't. Besides, If Wallet was the problem, doesn't it stand to reason it wouldn't work with Visa, Visa Debit and Discover, etc.?

Your thoughts would be most welcome.

I have the same issue, just got my iPhone 7 Plus, added back my MC, Personal AMEX but it won't take the AMEX Corporate, the same card that was active on my 6 Plus the day before. Has anyone tried removing the card from the old phone and then trying to add it to the new? I haven't tried that yet as my old phone is at home.

Yep, still in the same predicament. I guess it is good to see that there isn't some issue going on with my card/hardware only. Other than the above this is what I've done thus far:

  • Contacted Verizon, they advised that they don't have anything to do with the Apple Pay service.
  • Contacted AMEX again, AMEX said everything is good on the card from their end.
  • Backed up my iPhone 7 Plus, then restored it to factory. I was able to re-add all of my cards as described above with the exception of the Corporate AMEX.
  • Waited two weeks, tried to add the Corporate AMEX again--same error message.

I suppose the only thing to do at this point is make a Genius appointment but I am almost certain that is going to be wasted time for them to explain that it is an issue with American Express since the card is on their approved list.

I know it was suggested above to delete it from the old phone. I don't have that option anymore as I deleted it before I wiped the old phone and traded it in. After I did that, I received an email from AMEX stating that my card was removed and I was free to re-add it to Apple Pay.

My suspicion is that it is an Apple problem and getting answer will be as easy as pulling teeth.
