Need legacy Java SE 6 runtime

Hi, Kurt!

I downloaded the legacy Java SE 6 installer using the link provided here, but, whe I try tô intall it, I receive the following error message:

“javaforosx.dmg” está danificado e não pode ser aberto. Você deve movê-lo para o Lixo.

My OS is configurated to Brazilian portuguese, so the translation to English should be something like this:

“javaforosx.dmg” is damaged and cannot be opened. You must move it to Trash.

I’ve even tried to open the installer using control + click, in order to request a security exception, but I still receive the same error message.

What’s happening? How can it be fixed and/or does Java 6 have another download link?

Whilst in Safe mode, although the Java error message stopped showing, I still couldn't make the Java 6 download successfully: it kept saying that the file is damaged and I have to move it to Trash.

I also removed every item in my login items, but the problem continues, when booting in normal mode.

I've tried to download the etrecheck as recommended, but it is also accused of being damaged (what is very strange), as shown in the image bellow:

It is not broken I tested it before I posted it to you. If you click on the link, you will see this.

and if you click on the download button it will start.

downloading from macupdate is not always a good idea as their downloads can contain malware.

I've clicked on other links in this discussion and they do work.

Yip that's the window ... I went there so many times I lost count. The download button doesn't show up. And I can click until I'm blue in the face and nothing happens. I've been trying to sort this out for months. The download did work from here last year (I can't remember when it was - maybe November) but it didn't help - I still got the Legacy 6 message. The only other thing I did differently last night was to delete everything that says Java from my machine. So hopefully the download isn't infected. I really didn't have another choice. My husband has checked the file via Virus Total and it seems to be clean. Thanks for your trouble 🙂

1) I realize that. You're asking where to get it.

2) That statement is 100% wrong. Java is software you must install in order to run Java applets. Java 6 from Apple is for running older Java applets on your Mac. Java 8 from Oracle is for running Java apps on the web.

They way you're seeing the Java 6 download page only happens if JavaScript is off. Open Safari's preference again and make sure this check box is on.

Also, the legacy Java comes from Apple and not from Oracle!

Er, yes, I know that. Just because I didn't mention both in the one particular sentence above, doesn't mean I don't know the difference.

You could try downloading whilst in Safe mode, Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. If that doesn't work then might there be something third party that is preventing it from downloading correctly. You can download this, http://etrecheck.com/ install it, run it and then paste the report back here so we can see if there is something that might be causing an issue.

I wish I could answer that one. It's not just this topic where users have said the download button on the Java 6 page doesn't appear for them. Or, the button is there, but doesn't do anything when clicked.

Click the top left link with the lion on it. It will end up taking you to the same Java 6 download page, but maybe approaching it through Apple's downloads page will cause it to behave differently. While that's a bit of a stretch (wishful thinking), it can't hurt to try.

I just purchased a 2015 MacBook and was having the same issue running Photoshop as Tony. Your Java 2015 link worked for me as well. Thanks. However, before that I installed Java 8, thinking that is what I needed. I'm not sure what Jave 8 does. Is there a reason to keep it or should I uninstall it? Did it replace an earlier version that was already installed?

Java 6 is only needed for legacy apps that won't run without it (they ignore newer versions).

You would only need Java 8 for web sites that won't work properly without it. Otherwise, there's normally no good reason to have it installed.

Java 8 consists of two files. The main package which contains all pieces related to Java 8, and an alias that appears as an icon in the System Preferences. Delete the following two files to remove Java 8.

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

/Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefPane

I have re-read all of the posts and the links do not work....could someone please re-post a fresh link so I can download: legacy Java SE 6 runtime

I am not comfortable doing anything with Terminal so another solution would be appreciated.

(I've downloaded the old Java 6 in order to run Blurb's "BookSmart" bookful-of-images printing program, but oddly, although my current MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013 running 10.12.6) showed everything that's on the Apple download page and let me download the Java 6 installer, my older MacBook Pro (15", Late 2008 with CD drive slot) running El Capitan 10.11.1) wouldn't display any logo NOR the "Download" button, and no clickable areas appeared on the download page, and I couldn't download from it! Weird. But thanks for your full explanation.

When a download as small as EtreCheck can't get to you undamaged, something isn't right. Particularly when it doesn't work even in Safe Mode.

Make a complete, restorable backup of your system. Reinstall the OS. With any luck, the issue will just be that the OS was damaged.

In my case, I was trying to download - indeed DID download ..several times - the "deprecated" (i.e; vintage, no longer supported) Java SE 6 "Runtime" version so that I could use Blurb's "BookSmart" picture-book editing software, but none of the Java SE 6 versions - whether from Apple's site nor from Oracle's own site - got BookSmart working.

The helpful people at Blurb's helpdesk pointed me towards the same Apple download site as described in this thread, but when BookSmart STILL didn't work, they sent me a link to the Java 6 SDK (Software Development Kit) which I downloaded ..and then everything worked perfectly!

So in this case I got a message from the Operating System telling me to download the "runtime" version ..but what the program actually needed was the full SDK version! With that installed, I've had no further problems.

So with BookSmart Java SE 6 runtime isn't sufficient; the SDK is necessary ..and perhaps that's true for some other programs which may need the "legacy" (i.e; "old") Java SE 6 SDK version in order to work.

Ah, so that's what was going on. I suppose the OS can't readily tell that an app needs the SDK version to run. It just knows the app is calling for Java 6 and automatically points to the run-time version.

Many thanks for that new link. But note that it says on that download page "..installs the same deprecated version of Java 6 included in the 2015-001, 2014-001, and 2013-005 releases".

So this is a new link, but - apparently - to the same download as before.

(In my case none of those downloads fixed my problem with Blurb's "BookSmart" photo-album-making software as these links go to a "runtime" version of Java 6, but a download of the full Java 6 "SDK" (software development kit) DID fix my problem, which needed a "fuller" version of the old Java 6, and not just the slimline "runtime" version as offered by Apple.

The SDK version is available from Oracle's site, but - as far as I can see - NOT in Mac format (only Linux, Solaris and Windows) here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-j avase6-419409.html and the version which I used was put on a download site (rather like Dropbox) specially for me by Blurb, whom I can't thank enough!
