Q: Why is my MBP's trackpad's physical click restored after an SMC reset?
Of course the title of the post may sound a little awkward. Right you are, I'm not asking for a solution, rather asking why a particular solution did work.
My 15" MBP's (purchased in January '16) trackpad suddenly started refusing physical "click" from today morning. I remember clicking the touchpad last night even. The problem, in detail, is that when I press the trackpad to "click" (as opposed to "Tap to Click") it, it doesn't get pressed. It sort of felt like getting jammed from below, absolutely out of nothing (no shake, jerk etc.)
Googling around, this solved my problem.
- Turn off your computer.
- Plug in the MagSafe adapter.
- Press Shift-Option-Control, on the left side of the keyboard, and the power button, at the same time.
- Let go of all the buttons.
- Turn your computer back on with the power button.
I absolutely don't like the 'magic' in this case. Was it a coincidence? How come SMC reset which is a firmware hack, IMO, solved the problem? Is there a 'real' problem with the trackpad? Should I carry it to Apple care?
Above all, if the hack above at all qualifies to be a solution, can somebody please explain the logic behind?
