Q: Data and Documents issues

I have an Ipod touch 16GB.

Ok so I contacted apple support for this issue but there was either an issue with their chat system or they couldn't answer it, I have included the transcript below. Essentially my issue is documents and data "as displayed in itunes" is currently taking up more space than all of my other media put together. That is 5.54GB out of about 11GB used so far. In storage management documents and data for all my apps adds up to significantly less than the above number. The largest uses 70MB which sounds alot but every other app is significanty less than that with the next two largest being 33MB and 6MB.

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. How can I help you?

Hi I've got two questions really.

Trace

Okay

*********

First when I bought my ipod it was marketed as having 16GB but it appears to have significantly less.

David

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. My name is David. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

David

Hello James, how are you ?

*********

good thankyou.

David

Glad to hear it

David

How can I help you today ?

*********

I don't know if you have the previous message but essentially I have a 16GB ipod with only 12GB of memory available.

David

Okay, so there is 12 GB available out of 16. Okay, and what is the issue ?

********

Sorry i meant there is supposed to be 16GB of storage but there is only 12.

********

So if i didnt have all my apps and music etc installed i would still only have 12GB overall.

David

That is correct, and it is expected. There is still 16GB of storage on the device, but several gigabytes of that is reserved for iOS and system data. That is why, the storage available to you is less than 16GB

********

Ok that sounds fine, however I do have another query to do with documents and data.

David

Just as an example, I have an iPod touch, and it is a 32GB model, I have 27.8GB available to me of the 32

David

Sure, how can I help with your other question ?

*********

Well in Itunes documents and data shows as taking up around 5.5GB of storage.

**********

This seems very high as when i researched it, It seemed to correspond with the memory used by applications. When i went into memory management and went through all my apps the total documents and data usage was much less than displayed on itunes?

***********

Also it may be useful to know i have 2.7GB of apps

David

Okay, does the total space on the iPod and iTunes, as well as the total used and available spaces match, or are at least fairly similar ?

*****

Itunes shows the available space as 1.2GB, the ipod shows 1GB of available space.

David

Okay, that doesn’t really seem like an issue, it is possible that iTunes and the iPod could interpret the data differently, especially since the iPod knows the apps that are on the device, and could distinguish data more accurately than iTunes. Also have you updated iTunes, just to be sure that it is on the most recent version ?

***********

Yes i only just installed Itunes today, however I really don't have enough content on my ipod to fill 12GB of memory.

David

What applications are you using on your iPod ?

*************

I have 30 applications averaging around 100MB in size, I have 5 podcasts between 1 and 2 hours long, 150 songs around 4mb each, 160 photos and a couple of short videos.

Settings, general, storage and usage, manage storage will tell you what app is using how much space.

So one place to start to see where the data hog is.

as to your 12 and 27 gig numbers, that's normal. First, 16 gig isn't really 16. It's all due to rounding up when memory is figured. Just like a 4 gig flash drive is really 3.7 gig. that ratio keeps up as things get bigger so your 16 gig iPod having 12 and change after the iOS is installed is normal. Same with 27 gig for a 32 gig device.

Also I'm going to ask the hosts to edit out your e-mail address from the post. it's never good to post that in an open forum
