Q: RE: Template Chooser in Pages

I use hundreds of custom templates (that I created myself) for work. They are stored in a very organized way in folders and subfolders on my desktop. Each time I open a template, the box pops up that says "This is a custom template" ...then you have to click either "Cancel," "New Document" OR "Add to Template Chooser".

 

I want to EITHER:

1) Bypass this box so that it never pops up at all when I open one of my templates; OR

2) Have it automatically select the second option ("New Document") so that it opens as a new document without making me go through the whole template chooser option

 

I called Apple today and was told that there is no ability within the Preferences to make such an override. Does anyone have a work around via Terminal or otherwise?

 

(I should mention that I want to bypass Template Chooser because it does not allow for me to keep my documents organized in folders/subfolders like I want. The only way templates can show up in Template Chooser is in alphabetical order which does not work for me since I have literally hundreds).

    I work with Pages '09 because it is by far the superior Application.

     

    Whilst Pages '09 lets you create your own custom folders in the Template Chooser, I find a better solution is to simply create Pages documents, making sure they are exactly as you want them to open on screen, at the view you want, with whatever flyouts and palettes visible to get down to work, with correct Styles and Captured Pages, then simply save them into nested folders on your desktop and Lock them in Finder's Get Info.

     

    Locked in Get Info will make Pages ask you to save them with a new name.


    Stationery Pad does the same.

     

    Finder lets you easily browse and preview them.


    Change the View to Large Icons or Quickview or Quicklook to preview the documents and flick through the pages within the files without having to open them. If you have used custom graphics or fonts or need to add other notes, you can add Comments in the File Info or drag a separate Textswatch into the folder with the file.

     

    In Finder you can search or type the name of the template to quickly locate, select and open them.

     

    You can do none of that in Pages 5's Template Chooser and there are still limitations in Pages '09 even though it is far more usable than Pages 5.

     

    Doing this all in Finder is much faster than in Template Finder and is far faster to manage, rename and archive your work.

    Peter, thank you for this response. I currently use Pages 09, but would prefer, after all these years, to finally switch over to the new version of Pages because of some of the new features it has.

    Pages 5 is still missing well over 100 features and those it has in common with Pages '09 mostly work badly.

     

    There are very few "new" features in Pages 5 and the few that there are don't work very well or fail at some random moment leaving you with unrecoverable work. Also every version of Pages Apple releases is less compatible and with more problems.

     

    Pages '09 is still running and compatible across 5 different versions of OSX. The files are not trashed by eMailing over non-Apple servers and they work blazingly fast and can generally be recovered when something goes wrong.

    It may have some new features but it's missing well over a 100 features that have been in previous versions. Like Peter, I continue to use Pages 4.3 on a daily basis.

    There are only two new worthwhile features in Pages 5/6:

     

    Linked Tables and the Boolean Drawing Tools (which unfortunately will lock up even the most powerful Macs).

    If you insist on using Pages 5/6 what I said above still applies, because the Template Chooser is worse than Pages '09.

     

    Pages '09's Template Chooser lets you see the previews at custom large sizes, flick through the pages in the template and jump to Template names by typing.

     

    Pages 5/6 blocks you doing just about anything efficiently. The Programmers responsible should be ashamed of themselves. It is like 3 decades of Usability Design skills were thrown out the window for the sake of a "Look" which they will trash yet again in the near future.
