Thanks for posting your question in the Apple Support Community! I understand that you have specific ringtones set for your contacts, but when they call you, you only hear the default ringtone. I rely on custom ringtones to know who's calling before having to look at my phone, so I can understand wanting to make sure this feature is working for you. I'm happy to offer some help.
I recommend to start with restarting your iPhone. This can help resolve issues like this.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You may also want to go to one of your contacts that has a custom ringtone, and try changing the ringtone to something else. Then test it out to see if it still plays the default. If that doesn't do the trick, the next step I would recommend is to reset your settings on your iPhone. This won't erase any personal data but it's a good practice to backup, just to make sure your data is safe.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
After you backup, you can reset all settings. This won't erase any personal data, but it will reset settings like Ringtones, Display & Brightness, Sounds, Wallpapers, Touch ID, Apple Pay and cards, Restrictions, Date & Time, Wi-Fi and APN preferences. You'll need to set those things back up after resetting, so make sure you have your Wi-Fi passwords handy.
To reset, you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Once your settings are reset, set up a custom ringtone and then test it out.
Cheers!
