My system preferences can't see my Epson scanner

Recently my system prefgerences "printers and scanners" can't see my Epson scanner.

It is there in System information on the usdb device tree and the Epson scan software works but I don't like that software very much: it is slow and clunky, whereas the Apple scan software is a delight.

It has worked fine until recently, perhaps since I installed El Cap, but I can't get it to work now.
