When I create a playlist, does the song duplicate itself for the playlist and also remain in my main music library?
Also, how can I delete all my playlists so I can start over with a different way of organizing my songs?

2. You will need to delete playlists by using back space key (delete). You tracks will remain in your library.

Thanks Jim. I am not sure, but I think I have already tried that and it didn't work; but it will go back and try it again. I have another question .... why are many of my songs in iTunes grayed out (even though they are checked) and will not let me play them or move them to a playlist. I have the latest version of iTunes 12.5.1.21
