iOS 10 App Store Background Battery Killer

I have an iPhone 7 Plus and the battery life is being killed by the App Store background activity. It averages at least 50% usage of my iPhone's battery each day and the phone is constantly warm. I've tried soft resetting, turning off background app updates and signing out and back in of the app store. I've seen a lot of issues posted on this topic but have not come across a solid solution. Any advice?

Hi, ksbarnz!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reviewing your post, I am understanding that the App Store seems to be using quite a bit of your battery life in the background. I rely on my iPhone every day, so I definitely know it's important to monitor what uses the battery; I'm happy to help!

You've already gotten started with some great troubleshooting steps. Since signing out and back into the App Store, restarting the iPhone and turning off Background App Refresh haven't helped, I do have a some additional troubleshooting I can suggest. Before you begin, I would recommend making a backup of your iPhone, following the steps here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have your backup, restore your iPhone to factory settings as described in this article: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory settings

After the restore, set your iPhone up as a new device (meaning without using the backup you previously created--at least temporarily). You can sign into iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and the iTunes & App Store. Then, monitor your iPhone's battery life, and how much of it the App Store is using, over the next 24 hours.

If everything looks as expected, you can then restore your backup following the steps here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Test the battery performance for an additional 24 hours. If the issue was not present when the iPhone was set up as a new device, but returned after you restored your backup, it would indicate a conflict with the data on the iPhone. In that situation, restore your iPhone to factory settings again, without restoring your backup.

Cheers!

I am having the same issue, iPhone 7 Plus , apple watch, and Powerbeats2 wireless, app store was using roughly 70 percent of my battery and would last only a few hours. After unpairing my watch and repairing without syncing any music the battery still was draining. I did have photos synced however i do not think thats the issue. After listening to music today on the powerbeats the battery started to drain again. I think it has to do with either syncing content to a apple watch, or listening to music via bluetooth headphones with watch and phone on(maybe music control on watch). I have turned off the headphones , restarted both products, and now am using the lightning headphones. The battery works perfectly.

I have been having this problem too. I got my iPhone 7 on launch day and paired it to my existing Series 1 apple watch. I never synced music to the series 1 watch. After having my series 2 watch for a few days I synced a playlist and went for an outdoor run without the iPhone. It was then I started noticing battery drain. Very quick battery drain, all attributed to the "app store" app. The phone would get so hot it was uncomfortable to even put it in my pocket. After several phone calls with Apple they replaced my iPhone 7 which I got on Monday. I set it all up, paired it to the watch, and Tuesday through Thursday it worked great. Well, this morning it was time for an outdoor run on my workout schedule (if I am doing the rower or weights I listen to bluetooth headphones directly from my phone), so I synced my workout playlist to my Apple Watch S2 and that's when I noticed the iPhone 7 battery start to drain, and yup - the App Store app is now again showing it is sucking down the battery.

I faced the exact same issue with all the same devices. Just unpaired and repaired my watch series 2 now. Waiting for battery to hit 100% before I run but will not sync a music playlist. I have a few songs in my playlist that are unable to download from Apple Music. Perhaps it is constantly trying to download those to keep syncing the playlist? I also notice it is only when I am on WiFi.

I have this same issue with my brand new Apple Watch Nike+. When will Apple address this with a software fix? Are thy aware of this issue?

To recap:

I sync an Apple Music playlist to my Apple Watch. I workout with the watch and bluetooth headphones and leave my iPhone behind, essentially using my Apple Watch as an iPod. After my workout, I return to my phone for normal use and discover that my watch has somehow lost the previously synced playlist. The watch is now continuously attempting to sync the playlist, which drains my iPhone's battery in a matter of hours all while making the phone very warm to the touch. The battery usage says that "App Store" is using up to 80% of my battery running in the background for 5+ hours. This battery drain and rise in iPhone temperature continues until I totally un-pair my watch.

Apple - fix this now.

I have exactly the same problem. I was using my Apple Watch Series 2 as the "source" of the Music with my bluetooth headphone while I was on a plane for work trip. When I landed, I return to my phone for normal use and also found out that my watch has somehow lost the previously synced playlist. I believe this was what's causing my iPhone battery to drain in a matter of hours and making it very warm to the touch. My battery usage says that "App Store" is using up to 65-67% of my battery running in the background.

The temporary solution until Apple fix this bug:

Un-pair and then repair my Apple Watch and DO NOT sync an Apple Music playlist to your Apple Watch. After I did this I can confirm that my iPhone 6 battery is golden.

This is a very major and annoying bug, Apple please fix this!

Hi guys,

Sorry for the lack of updates. Apples service when calling in for assistance has been pathetic and disappointing up until now. I keep explaining how this bug is rendering my Apple Watch uselsss and how many people are experiencing the issue.

They now requested additional logs but the agent hasn't emailed me the instructions yet.

I urge EVERYONE on this forum. CALL APPLE AND COMPLAIN. Let's get the numbers going and hopefully they will release a software fix.
