iOS 10 App Store Background Battery Killer

I have an iPhone 7 Plus and the battery life is being killed by the App Store background activity. It averages at least 50% usage of my iPhone's battery each day and the phone is constantly warm. I've tried soft resetting, turning off background app updates and signing out and back in of the app store. I've seen a lot of issues posted on this topic but have not come across a solid solution. Any advice?

Hi, ksbarnz!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reviewing your post, I am understanding that the App Store seems to be using quite a bit of your battery life in the background. I rely on my iPhone every day, so I definitely know it's important to monitor what uses the battery; I'm happy to help!

You've already gotten started with some great troubleshooting steps. Since signing out and back into the App Store, restarting the iPhone and turning off Background App Refresh haven't helped, I do have a some additional troubleshooting I can suggest. Before you begin, I would recommend making a backup of your iPhone, following the steps here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have your backup, restore your iPhone to factory settings as described in this article: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory settings

After the restore, set your iPhone up as a new device (meaning without using the backup you previously created--at least temporarily). You can sign into iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and the iTunes & App Store. Then, monitor your iPhone's battery life, and how much of it the App Store is using, over the next 24 hours.

If everything looks as expected, you can then restore your backup following the steps here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Test the battery performance for an additional 24 hours. If the issue was not present when the iPhone was set up as a new device, but returned after you restored your backup, it would indicate a conflict with the data on the iPhone. In that situation, restore your iPhone to factory settings again, without restoring your backup.

Cheers!

Ok...back with an update what I found that might have fixed the issue. I did the restore as you suggested last week and battery life was excellent up until today. However, I looked at the apps that I used today and deleted the most recently used one. I deleted the "T-Mobile Tuesdays" app and battery life seems to be back to normal. What is strange is that T-Mobile Tuesdays wasn't showing as a high battery usage app, it was still the App Store Background process that was killing my battery. Not sure how they are tied together, but will monitor it and post back if this truly fixed the issue.

I'm having the same exact issue with my iPhone 7 Plus with App Store background activity taking several hours from my battery each day. I also own the Apple Watch Series 2 if that matters, and I've tried restoring and setting up as a new iPhone which seemed to work for a few days but then the issue came right back as you explained. I don't have T-Mobile Tuesdays but I had the T-Mobile app which I deleted recently based on your reply to see if that resolves anything. I have an Apple appointment either way at the Apple Store tomorrow and will also update.

I am having the EXACT same issue with an iPhone 7 Plus. Tried restoring and setting up as an entirely new phone. Went away for about 4-5 days and is now back. Battery drains completely in about 2-3 hours and app store background activity is taking up ~75% of the battery over the last 24 hours. Phone is also hot near the rear camera. Tried deleting a few apps I used today, hasn't done anything. I can't believe what a complete piece of trash this phone has been from the moment I switched it on. Please let me know if you're able to find any fix!

It seems the Apple Watch is draining the battery, with the App Store background activity somehow. I have turned off Bluetooth on my iPhone and/or put the Apple Watch on airplane mode and the battery has not drained nor is the App Store running in the background. My iPhone is also not getting warm due to this issue anymore. I'm contemplating whether I should keep the watch now or wait for some kind of update. Please let me know if this helped solve your issues too!

I have had this issue for a few months now on both my iphone 6 and iphone 7 as well as ios 9 and ios 10. I spend 2 hours with Apple Support last night and ended up taking all the logs off my phone to send to their engineering team. I think this is a bug/exploit in the App Store app.

I will let you know what Apple Support comes back with.

I don't think its any single one app causing this. Does everyone who is having this issue have an Apple watch connected?

I've also chatted with an Apple iOS senior advisor and they took all the logs from my phone, but recommended I visit an Apple store for an exchange. However, based on my recent findings, and troubleshooting with other people that own the Apple Watch... they have also discovered the Apple Watch is depleting their battery and the App Store background activity ceases once the bluetooth is turned off on either device. I have emailed the senior advisor and hopefully will update once I receive some more information. mikeb147, Do you currently own an Apple Watch?

Yep I also have an Apple Watch. Let me switch off my Bluetooth and see if this improves things for me, I will let you know. I don't think an exchange will fix this, they replaced my iPhone 6 with a new one when I had the issue before I got my iPhone 7.

This is what I have tried so far:

  • Turned off background app refresh.
  • Turned off location services.
  • Tried just Wifi and just mobile.
  • Turned off Automatic Downloads of music, apps
  • Reloaded iOS and setup as a new phone (this worked for a few days before issue came back).
  • Had the same issue on my iPhone 6 with iOS 9 and iOS 10 and now same issue on my new iPhone 7 (which i purposely setup as a new phone.)

Will be interesting to see if the others also had watches?
