Q: Encrypted PDF will not open after IOS 10 update

Ever since updating to IOS 10 I cannot open password protected PDFs on iPhone.  When I click on pdf a gray screen opens with the PDF file size.  There is no place to enter password.  The screen locks up and I have to completely close the mail.  This problem only started after update.   Phones not updated do not have a problem.  Several coworkers are using newer phones with the same problem.  Our IT department says it is a problem with Apple.

IF I choose another app to open the PDF a message says the file cannot be open or is corrupted.  Even using a website for mail will not permit the password protected file to open.  Has anyone else had this problem or have a solution?

iPhone 5, iOS 10.0.2

Our users at work are reporting this too. Our paystubs are sent as encrypted PDFs to their work email and all the symptoms you describe above occur on all iOS devices that have been upgraded to >10.0.0. I applied the 10.0.2 update hoping it was fixed, but still nothing. Saving to iCloud Drive also is not effective.

The only workaround I've found is to open in Dropbox or Google Drive. Those apps' built-in pdf viewer opens the file successfully.

That was the same issue our city was having.  Your solution worked!   I installed Drop Box and it works fine.

    Thank You!!

We have had this issue as well. My guess is that they are requiring a different encryption level to pass files from one app to another. Our password-protected PDFs were RC-128 and I'm guessing they need to be at least AES-128, but I can't prove it. We are trying to rebuild our program that applies the password to see if AES-128 works.

The Reply that is marked "Solved" is not a solution and should not have been flagged as the solution, it is simply a work around and many iPhone users do not have that option available or they do not want to use that option to simply open their PDF files. The iPhone should be capable of opening a password protected PDF period (as my Galaxy Note does).

I am adding a new post so this issue will still be open.

Just got off the phone with Apple and they have had several local governments that send out payroll this way and now their employees cannot open their payroll stubs.  He said that the engineers are aware of the problem and they are working on a patch.  Until then he suggested using Google Drive or Dropbox to open the pdf.
