Q: Add wireless access point to AirPort Time Capsule

I have the AirPort Time Capsule set up in my office. I am using internet phones that require an ethernet connection and want to set them up in a separate room than the one the TC is in but don't want to run cables between the two rooms. (Relocating the TC isn't an option) I want to add a wireless access point to the TC so I can plug the phones directly into the WAP in a separate room from the TC without an ethernet connection between the TC and WAP. How do I set this up? Does the WAP need to be and Apple product? I'm okay using Linksys, Netgear, etc. for the WAP if possible.

Thanks!

One option is to use an AirPort Express base station. Since it appears that you want a device that will provide both wireless and wired access, it would need to be configure to extend the wireless network provided by the Time Capsule.

Also, since the desired connection between these devices is wireless, you will not be able to use a non-Apple product to do so.

Finally, another thing to consider, would be to create a roaming network. This would require that the routers are interconnected by Ethernet, but you could substitute Power-line adapters instead of Ethernet cabling. These adapters can create a pseudo Ethernet connection using the building's electrical circuit.

The reason I mention this last point is for overall bandwidth performance. Extending using a wireless only connections offers the least performance. Often half the original bandwidth will be lost in just establishing the extended network. Since you want to use Internet phones, voice quality may suffer significantly.

Thank you Tesserax. The information's very helpful!

Just as a quick follow up: In the room where I'll have the phones, it's close enough that I still get a good wi-fi signal from the TC. In that case, could I just skip out on the Airport Express all together and simply use power-line adaptors (either w/multiple ports or attach an ethernet hub) to connect the phones? It sounds like, as a wi-fi source isn't needed this could work, in theory at least?

    Thanks!

    Yes, that should work.
