Q: MBP 2015 random reboots after upgrade to Sierra

I updated to Sierra a few days ago, and since then, my MBP had been randomly restarting. The Activity Monitor shows high CPU/Memory usage for kernel task and windows server, and the console has numerous logs relating to com.Apple.Webkit (with suffixes of memory_resource, wakeups_resource, and cpu_resource). I've reset the SMC & PRAM with no change in behavior.

I ran EtreCheck this morning right after boot up with the following results:

EtreCheck version: 3.0.6 (315)

    Hello Denise,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that your MacBook Pro is restarting randomly. The following article provides potential causes of spontaneous restarts and what to do about them: OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

    Best regards.

Thanks for your help.  Unfortunately, there's no evidence of kernel panics or crashes in the system logs - just the memory & cpu resource logs.

I took the step of wiping the drive and doing a clean install of Sierra yesterday, and while I haven't had any reboots yet, my battery drained down from 100% to almost nothing overnight while the cover was closed on the computer.  Just going to take it into the Genius Bar to see what they can figure out.

I have this same problem, was the Genius Bar able to fix it?

It ended up being a hardware issue for my MBP - when the tech at the Genius Bar ran the quick 2-3 min. diagnostics on it, it took about 15-20 minutes before erroring out.  They sent it in for repair, and ended up with a new logic board & battery out of it.  Have had it back for a week, and everything seems to be running smoothly.

So you got an error code when running the AHT, right?

I have a similar issue but AHT shows no error.

It's a '15 MBP, so it doesn't have AHT, but I didn't get any error code when I ran the Apple diagnostics before I took it in.  The only thing that showed up with the in-store diagnostics was a SD card issue, but it crashed before it could complete the scan.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have been through every troubleshooting steps I know of and went as far as doing 4 clean reinstall of macOS in the last 7 weeks and it still freezes at least twice a day under light CPU & memory load. Given the info you provided, I am positive that mine has hardware faults too even though the AHT and S.M.A.R.T diagnostic shows no error.

I have booked myself in for the genius bar for tomorrow, will be back with an update for the reference of fellow Macbook owners.
